What is Social Media Marketing? Why is it important for your business?

Friday, June 18th, 2010 by terrymcelligott

Two years ago, you almost never heard the phrase “social media”. This year, it has been appearing in blogs, on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Delicious, news websites and a mittful of other sites and services with increasing frequency. The term itself hasn’t been in the popular lexicon for very long at all. A year, perhaps? Even less? But here it is today, and it demands attention.

Let’s make social media part of your marketing toolbox. TMWeb and our Search Engine Optimization partner, Bluestripe.ca can help. Online forums, sites and online communities allow your company to strengthen its fan base by tapping into the positive energy of your pleased customers. Think of Social Media as referrals on steroids.

One of the frightening aspects of this new resource is the possibility that one impossible to please customer might organize a public revolt because of bad service or bad products. Well, we all know that a few disgruntled customers can make life hard even though you provide high quality and superior service in everything you do. Today, this will probably happen on the Internet. Your own large network of pleased customers who are active evangelists about your products is your best defence in a case like that.

Implementing these common sense strategies is not a simple task.  At the top of this article, I mentioned “YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Delicious, news websites…” and left out a lot of other web-based hangouts. Social Media is a VERY large field, and your company doesn’t have the time or the resources to monitor, feed and track it all. TMWeb does! Contact me here.

For anyone with a sense of jazz history, 2009 began notably. In January, tenorman David “Fathead” Newman (left) died. Sax players Hank Crawford and Leroy Cooper also passed away. All three were associated with Ray Charles.

Like shadows, they were outshone by Ray’s bright star but this fame wouldn’t have been quite the same without their soulful backing. All three left behind fine shelves of recordings dating back the the 1950s. David Sanborn has wonderful words for these three brilliant players: “These guys gave me my life. They turned on the lights for me, and opened the door to all that was great and true about music. Thank you, gentle men.”

Darwin and his ideas at 200.

Charles Darwin changed our world. He was born 200 years ago this year, 2009. I’ve just read Origin of Species and Voyage of the Beagle. Took me all these years to get around to it. I’m sorry it took me so long.

This is my favourite picture of him. It’s so unlike photographs of the era. Darwin lived in a time when having your picture taken meant sitting still while trying to look as uncomfortable as possible. And you had to look serious if not downright unpleasant at the same time.

This 1880 photo is none of those things. It’s casual. Here’s a man leaning against something. And is that a … twinkle in his eye? Maybe he’s saying “yes, yes .. I’m the man who said all these things. What do you make of it?”

Wikipedia is probably as good a place as any to start a search for him.

Reading “On the Origin of Species”

Reading “The Voyage of the Beagle”
